Alfa Romeo 166 Engine

166 Base Engine: In the best tradition of Alfa Romeo, the New Alfa 166 remains at the forefront of automobile engineering, offering driving pleasure that lives up to the highest expectations.

The New Alfa 166 offers four different petrol engines, plus the powerful new second generation Common Rail diesel: the 175 bhp 2.4 JTD M-Jet 20V.

2.0 Twin Spark
Great thrills behind the wheel. Remarkable power, high torque even at low speeds and particularly outstanding performance: these are the main qualities of the two-liter aspirated engine on the New Alfa 166. The secret lies in the setup of the Twin Spark engines: 16v giving maximum power; phase transformer and variable geometry intake for maximum elasticity; double ignition system to optimize combustion and minimize emissions; counter-rotating balancing shaft for smoother, vibration-free running and torsion damping for maximum quietness.
Technical data
Engine capacity: 1970 cm3. Four cylinders in line. 16 valves. Power output 110 kW (150 bhp) at 6300 rpm, torque 181 Nm at 3800 rpm.
2.5 V6 24V
The 2.5-liter engine is Alfa Romeo's first venture into the legendary world of the Alfa V6. The highly sensitive 'Drive by wire' electronic accelerator, developed from Formula 1 technology, brings great benefits in terms of performance, engine emissions and fuel consumption. The transmission is either 6-speed manual or Sportronic automatic.
Technical data
Engine capacity: 2492 cm3. Six cylinders at 60° V. 24 valves. Power output 138 kW (188 bhp) at 6300 rpm, torque 221 Nm at 5000 rpm.
3.0 V6 24v
The most powerful version of the V6, with engine block and cylinder head in light alloy, giving sensational performance (from 0 to 100 km/hr in 7.9 seconds, 8.6 seconds for Sportronic). It features an electronic accelerator, and heat exchanger for the cooling and lubrication systems. The transmission is 6-speed manual or Sportronic automatic.
Technical data
Engine capacity: 2959 cm3. Six cylinders at 60° V. 24 valves. Power output 162 kW (220 bhp) at 6300 rpm, torque 265 Nm at 5000 rpm.
3.2 V6 24v
There is also a brand new petrol engine for the New Alfa 166: the outstanding 3.2 V6 24 valve. An engine at the very top in terms of performance: 176.5 kW (240 BHP) available with all the smoothness and softness typical of six-cylinder engines. The very best of Alfa Romeo’s research and automotive technology went into achieving these results, with the development of a new crankshaft, cam shafts with new timing and new pistons enabling the engine capacity to be increased by lengthening the stroke to 78 mm. These changes not only make it possible to obtain high peaks of power output and high torque values, but also ensure regular, smooth power delivery even at low speeds. A solution designed to provide the driver with outstanding performance without forgetting the needs of day-to-day use in city traffic. The new 3.2 V6 24 valve petrol engine is at the very top of a range of engines that place the new Alfa 166 at the top of the executive saloon category.

Technical data Engine capacity: 3179 cm3. Six cylinders at 60° V. 24 valves. Power output 176.5 kW (240 bhp) at 6200 rpm, torque 289 Nm at 4800 rpm.
2.4 JTD 150 BHP
2.4 JTD, 150 BHP Among the diesels, there is the new 175 bhp 2.4 JTD M-Jet 20V and the quiet and reliable 150 bhp 2.4 JTD 10V, also with 5 cylinders and a Garrett turbocharger with variable geometry turbine.
Technical data
Engine capacity: 2387 cm3. Five cylinders in line. 10 valves. Power output 110 kW (150 bhp) at 4000 rpm, torque 305 Nm at 1800 rpm.
2.4 JTD 175BHP
he New Alfa 166 and the powerful new second generation Common Rail diesel: the 2.4 JTD M-Jet 20V, delivering 175 BHP at 4000 rpm. With generous torque, 385 Nm (39.3 kgm) at 2000 rpm (in the manual transmission version), a newly calibrated turbocharger, and with the direct injection pressure increased from 1350 to 1400 bar, the new engine with 5 in-line cylinders is notable for its reduced fuel consumption, low emissions and remarkable quietness when warming up and cruising. The four valves per cylinder are driven by tappets and rockers on a twin overhead camshaft. The Common Rail system features two new control strategies for automatically calibrating and balancing the diesel injected. Other brand new components designed by the Alfa Romeo research and engineering center include the cylinder head with hydraulic tappets, new steel connecting rods and crankshaft, pistons with internal channels for cooling oil circulation and the main and connecting rod bearings made from innovative materials.
